Good Password Practice - A New Online End-user Training Class From Cosaint CertifyTM
June 5, 2002 - Mount Vernon, WA
Cosaint Inc. (http://www.cosaint.net), a Mount Vernon (WA) based company specializing in online information security education for end-users, today announced a new web-based security awareness course - Good Password Practice.
Recent surveys have (once again) highlighted how lax people can be when it comes to choosing passwords. When end-users believe that 'password' is an acceptable password, securing your information assets really becomes an uphill struggle!
"Good Password Practice" is a short (about 30-minute) web-based training course designed to address this issue. It explains to users just how critical passwords are, what makes a password weak, and what are the characteristics of strong passwords. "Good Password Practice" goes on to provide a number of practical hints designed to make password choice and handling easier.
Interactive features, including a password strength meter, are used to keep the learners attention. An optional audio track - optimized for low bandwidth connections - is provided through a Java applet so that no plugins are required. At the end of the course, a mastery test is provided and successful students can download and print out their own personalized certificates. The material has been audited for accuracy by IT managers in client companies, and by a number of senior analysts at leading information security companies.
The Cosaint Certify management interface has also been updated in response to user feedback to provide even greater ease-of-use for both IT and non-IT staff such as HR departments. It features bulk upload and setup of accounts, automatic password generation, an e-mail tool to send reminders to the student list, and monitoring of student progress.
Walter Thomas, owner of a chain of insurance brokers in Washington, says:
"In the insurance business, we're heavily dependent on information technology to allow us to serve our customers better. At the same time, we're very aware that we need to take the utmost care to protect our clients' data as well as the information that we use to run our business. Cosaint Certify courses allow me to make sure that all new and current employees have a solid appreciation of basic computer security. And the testing built-in to Certify gives me confidence that they are really understanding the material as well. We're committed to information security and Cosaint Certify is one of the tools that we're building our strategy around."
Steve Addison, CEO of Cosaint says:
"Our first course, 'Defend Yourself Against Viruses', was very well received by our clients. Now, 'Good Password Practice' addresses the second major issue at the top of most IT manager's lists - how to train end-users to choose and maintain strong passwords. Information security is a judicious blend of hardware, software, policies and education. We believe that Cosaint Certify is a much-needed tool ideal for providing information security education to end-users."
