New from Cosaint ... HIPAA Security for Healthcare Staff
January 6, 2004 - Mount Vernon, WA
Cosaint Inc., a Mount Vernon (WA) based company specializing in online information security education for end-users, today announced a new web-based security awareness course - "HIPAA Security for Healthcare Staff".
The final version of the HIPAA Security Rule was issued by the DHHS in February, 2003. This rule mandates a wide range of provisions to improve the way that patient information is secured against disclosure, modification or loss. It also requires that all staff (including management) with access to patient information must be provided with security awareness training. The deadline for compliance with the Security Rule is April 21, 2005 for most covered entities such as healthplans, hospitals and clinics. So 2004 looks like it will be another busy year!
The HIPAA Security Rule mandates training on specific topics such as avoiding malicious software and managing passwords. Cosaint's new web-based training course - "HIPAA Security for Healthcare Staff" - covers the following topics:
- What is a virus and how might it affect you?
- How can you get a virus?
- How to handle e-mail attachments
- What to do if you think you've been infected
- Hoaxes and chain letters
- How to handle passwords safely
- How to choose good passwords
- Monitoring of login success/failure
as well as touching on other key areas of information security including physical security, social engineering and the use of e-mail.
The material includes interactive exercises for the students, an optional audio track and a short quiz to test the student's understanding of the training. Because of the broad scope of the HIPAA Security Rule, this course takes about 60 minutes to complete.
"HIPAA Security for Healthcare Staff" is available now from Cosaint or through the company's network of partners.
